Sound Formation Method™ Percussion Level 4

In this 2nd edition book you’ll learn how to hear multiple layers of rhythm simultaneously, techniques that make playing in 5/8, 7/8, 11/8 and 13/8 simple and intuitive, how to rapidly build a vocabulary of sixteenth note triplet syncopations, how to drastically increase your musical feel, and an easy way to simplify and organize a vast amount of rhythmic information.

There is a huge amount of rhythmic information that is immediately simplified when you’re able to recognize octaves of rhythmic shapes. The ability to recognize syncopations at the quarter note, eighth note, sixteenth note, and other levels allows you to start perceiving rhythm at multiple levels simultaneously. This is exactly like how harmonic instrumentalists are able to understand intervals within chords, upper structure triads, and other ways of making complex information much simpler.

New concepts in the Sound Formation Method™ like sequential syncopations which were introduced in the Level 2 Workbook, allow you a methodical way to practice the many relationships you must understand to master rhythm. There are many different pathways for practicing sequential syncopations and this unlocks and tremendous musicality in your playing.

By the end of this workbook you’ll know 14 rhythmic shapes which can be displaced into 72 different rhythmic configurations. This doesn’t include the variations of elisions, accent displacement, similar hits with the same beat position but different durations, or shapes within shapes. There’s a small number of rhythmic shapes which through displacement, sequential syncopations, and other relationships, make up an enormous amount of rhythmic information.

Learn how to master meters like 5/8, 7/8, 11/8, and 13/8 with a few very simple and easy techniques which allows you to use all of the previous rhythmic shapes you’ve learned within these larger meters. These techniques are expanded upon in subsequent workbooks for a very thorough and comprehensive approach.
