Rhythm & Percussion with Sound Math™ Level 5

The Level 5 Workbook unveils the relationship between polyrhythms and hemiolas – true hemiolas which are actually subdivided polyrhythms which can then be displaced and syncopated. The traditional definition of hemiola needs to be updated to clearly describe a rhythmic phenomenon that is pervasive of every musical genre and one of the defining factors of strong rhythm. Hemiolas are essentially changing the downbeat – either implied or actual. Check out this revolutionary book that will change the way you hear and perform rhythm forever. This book is appropriate for those that have completed the Level 1-4 Workbooks.

A 3:4 polyrhythm is actually different from a 4:3 polyrhythm. This book thoroughly explains why, and also addresses 3:4/4:3 polyrhythms and its hemiolas as well as 2:3/3:2 polyrhythms and its hemiolas.

The Level 2 Workbook thoroughly explains why syncopations are subdivisions that have rests and not displaced accents or an emphasis on the weak beats. The Level 5 workbook goes over how to break down or syncopate various hemiolas to create rhythmic patterns that could be interpreted in multiple tempos (more on tempo modulation in the Level 6 workbook).

We can displace, syncopate, and mix our hemiolas to create many strong groove patterns. How to mix hemiolas is explained along with many examples of displaced hemiola patterns and syncopated hemiolas.

Rhythmic Melodicism was introduced in the Level 4 Workbook and is expanded upon here with concepts like neighboring syncopation shapes and neighboring subdivision shapes. When used in the context of a groove such as the example in this page, very interesting and strong rhythmic variations are created.
