Sound Formation Method™ Level 5

This 2nd edition book unveils the relationship between polyrhythms and hemiolas. The SFM method updates the definition of hemiola to clearly describe many rhythmic phenomena that are pervasive in every musical genre and one of the defining factors of strong rhythm.  Check out this revolutionary book for musicians of all instruments and genres, that will change the way you hear and perform rhythm forever.

This book disambiguates polyrhythms of inverse ratios. It also clearly demonstrates the correlation between polyrhythms and various hemiolas. Many different types of hemiolas are classified and organized according to their relationships with one another and how to best improve your playing through their utilization.

The Level 2 Workbook updates the definition of syncopation. This workbook goes over how to syncopate various hemiolas to create rhythmic patterns that could be interpreted in multiple tempos.

We can displace, syncopate, and mix our hemiolas to create many strong groove patterns. How to mix hemiolas is explained along with many examples of displaced hemiola patterns and syncopated hemiolas.

Musicians often struggle immensely to play similar syncopations with a precision that extends to feel. The exercises in the SFM are designed to make playing otherwise confusing similar rhythms easy and intuitive, without needing to count them.

Interpose is an original piece in 3/4 co-written by Dr. Peter Stoltzman and Curtis Madigan using a simple 6:8 elision hemiola in the melody. This singular hemiola shape was the basis for the piece which features Stoltzman on piano and Madigan on cajon.
